I often find myself asking the question – in my head of course, “is there really a PERFECT foundation?” Well, somewhere within me I want to believe that it’s not just a gimmick. That there are in fact, chemist really striving to make the perfect foundation for consumers like “us”. You don’t have to pay close attention to know that there are all different formulas. There are formulas for oily, dry, combination skin types. I also understand that one might need a different type of formula durning season changes. That’s because there might be more humidity in the air, less humidity in the air, and so forth…. Let’s just say you are not a “makeup” type of person. All of this mambo jumbo about all the different types of foundation formulas will go over your head. For sure! Until a few years ago, I was that person, so I know what you feel like.
Misconceptions: High-end foundations are better for your skin, and are better period. Wrong. All wrong. In fact, there are high-end manufactures that create for drug store brands too. Did you know that? Let me name a few: L’Oreal, Maybelline, and Physicians Formula. So the same people who create formulas for MAC, Laura Mercier, and Lancome are all affiliated. It’s not a bad thing, but they do have to offer the consumer a good product at a price most people can afford these days. Not all of us have the pocket books to splurge $32 for a mascara.

Some good things to know about foundation:
1. Expiration – know the longevity of your foundation. Foundations start to break down about a month or so after the date they are set on the shelves to retail. Be aware of that! If its breaking down as a formula – what do you think is happening when you apply it to your skin. Something to think about.
2. Your shade – it does pay off to go to a cosmetic counter and get color matched. I would try a couple of different cosmo counters just to get a few different matches. That way you know more or less the shade your are consistently with a few different brands.
3. Get your skin examined – set up an appointment with a Dermatologist you trust. Get to know your skin type, how it functions, and stay on top of it (once a year is a good start).
4. Facials – it is important to maintain your skin. Make an appointment once a month or once every other month to get your pores cleaned, your face exfoliated, and hydrated. These are very important steps in maintaining healthy skin for a more even makeup application.
If you take time and follow these steps – your makeup should look flawless each time. Once you get to know all about your skin, choosing a foundation that works well with your type will be easy.
